Welcome, Newcomers and Visitors
The regular worship at First United is every Sunday at 10:00 am. There is also an informal small group worship at 8:30 am that takes place in room 14.
First United Church is on the corner of Bernard Avenue and Richter Street in downtown Kelowna. For visitors or those new to the area: You will enter Kelowna via Highway 97, whether approaching the city from the north or the south. Highway 97 becomes Harvey Avenue within city limits. If approaching from the south, about five blocks after you cross Okanagan Lake on the bridge, turn left (north) onto Richter. The church is three short blocks along on the right. If approaching from the north or the Kelowna International Airport, follow Highway 97/Harvey Avenue for approximately 13 km through town and turn right onto Richter. Map
Where do I park?
Free parking is available in the church’s lot, behind the building and accessed from northbound Richter Street. There are four spaces designated for handicapped parking and a ramp for access to the Hall and Sanctuary. On Sunday mornings you are also welcome to park in the Safeway lot across Richter, or on the surrounding streets. For evening meetings or special events, if the church lot is full, street parking is your best bet.
Is there a Nursery?
Infants and toddlers are treasured and welcome members of our church family. We offer supervised infant and toddler care every Sunday morning for children under three, however parents who prefer to do so are welcome to keep their children with them during the service or stay with them in the nursery. You will find it in Room 13 through the doors at the back of Hall.
What about Sunday School?
We offer Sunday School classes for children and youth from three years to Grade 12 every Sunday of the year. Children and youth attend the first part of the worship service and then leave for classes (except for intergenerational services, approximately six Sundays a year). First United follows the Whole People of God curriculum. Classes are taught by enthusiastic teams of volunteers who are committed to making Christian education fun and fulfilling. Sunday School classes are upstairs in the Christian Education wing, accessed from the back of the Hall.
What do people wear?
At First United, all worshipers are welcome in whatever style of dress they feel comfortable. At a typical service you will see people dressed in everything from suits to jeans, from yoga wear to upscale dresses.
Can I take Communion?
In the United Church we practice “open communion.”All who love God and seek to follow Jesus are welcome to share in this sacrament. Communion services are held approximately every six weeks. Communion is either served in the pew, or at stations at the front of the church. If you prefer, the communion elements will be brought to you where you sit.
