Outreach
Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. (Anthony J. D’Angelo)
The Mission of the Outreach Core Ministry is to listen, share, and act for justice and positive change in our church, in our community and globally.
A team of volunteers organise our weekly outreach program on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, where coffee and sandwiches are offered to an increasing number of downtown neighbours as well as to congregation members. Support is available for referrals to a variety of agencies and resources including our emergency Food Cupboard, Thrift Store vouchers and other help as needed.
An annual free New Year’s Day Dinner is a highlight of our year! A delicious meal of ham, turkey, roast beef and all the trimmings accompanies an evening of games, conversation, and meeting neighbours at table. Local owners of Tiger Lily Fashions organise a clothing room where clothes are available free of charge.
The GRG Support Circle meets monthly, providing support for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. First United members are closely involved with organising and facilitating the group.
Our Thrift Shop sells donated shoes, clothing, linens and small household items, with funds raised going to support the church’s outreach programs. Individuals who are in need of warm clothing, shoes or household goods have access to the thrift shop during the Tuesday and Thursday coffee mornings.
Since 2009, First United has had a sister community relationship with El Triunfo in El Salvador, Central America. Church members visit the community annually, correspond regularly, and offer solidarity and support through scholarships and projects such as the Seed & Silo project.
