Education
Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think. (Albert Einstein)
The Bible is a human product: it tells us how our religious ancestors saw things, not how God sees things.
(Marcus Borg)
The Sunday School program serves children from preschool through to Grade 12, while an infant and toddler room is available for children 2 years old and younger.
The children in Sunday School are divided into three age groups: preschool through Gr. 1 (ages 3-6), Grades 2 & 3, Grades 4-6, Youth (grades 7+). Our Sunday School uses a curriculum entitled The Whole People of God. It is a lectionary-based curriculum, which means it is based on the biblical stories being used in worship, in order that all ages have the same focus and family discussion is encouraged.
Other programs for children and youth are offered during the week including a Youth Group for Grades 7-12 that meets Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm. Fun Fridays at First happen monthly for school-aged children with activities such as Dinner & Movie Night (January), All Ages Dance (February), Lent Carnival (March) and Escape Room Night (April).
Several opportunities for Adult education are offered throughout the year. These include adult Bible study, Lenten lectures, and a variety of book studies throughout the year. As the quote at the top of the page reminds us, we are not as concerned with imparting data as we are with encouraging thoughts, questions, and wonderings.
Bible studies are regularly offered for adults. These 5-8 session small group studies explore our questions about the Bible and our faith lives in an open, conversational style.
