The Mission of the Outreach Core Ministry is education of the congregation and community about issues of justice, peace, and the integrity of creation and about ways to effect change.
The Outreach Ministry organises Tuesday and Thursday coffee mornings, where coffee, a sandwich and a cookie is offered to an increasing number of downtown neighbours as well as to congregation members. Support is available for referrals to a variety of agencies and resources including our emergency Food Cupboard where they are helped in choosing the supplies they need.
An annual free New Year’s Day dinner is prepared for those in need, including ham, turkey, beef and all the trimmings. Tiger Lily Fashions organises a “clothes closet” where clothes are available free of charge.
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Circle meets monthly at the church. First United members are closely involved with organising and facilitating the group.
First United has a thrift shop that sells donated shoes, clothing, draperies and small household items, with funds raised going to support the church’s outreach programs. Individuals who are in need of warm clothing and shoes or household goods, books or toys have access to the thrift shop during the Tuesday and Thursday coffee mornings.
Since 2009, First United has a sister community relationship with El Triunfo in El Salvador, Central America. Church members visit the community annually, correspond regularly and offer solidarity and support through scholarships and a silo project.
